“Our ancestors brought us here, but we are the ones who must ensure this place survives and prospers for our children.”

This special gathering began a few weeks ago when Dr. Tung Chen-yuan, Taiwan’s Representative to Singapore, invited me to join his delegation of distinguished Singaporean business leaders as a local representative. Standing there as a ninth-generation resident of Hengshan, welcoming them to neighboring Beipu along Highway No. 3, I was reminded of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew’s timeless words:
“Our ancestors brought us here, but we are the ones who must ensure this place survives and prospers for our children.”
Having once lived in Tanjong Pagar myself, that shared duty toward the sustainability of our home resonated deeply within me.
Today, these old and new friends are visiting the Hsinchu Science Park and ITRI to explore the cutting edge of modern technology. Yet, during our walk through Beipu, I shared a little-known historical parallel: a century ago, this very town was the "Special Economic Zone" of the global camphor industry.
Back then, the Jin Guang Fu Mansion functioned exactly like today’s Science Park Bureau, managing regional development and security. While Hsinchu stands today as the global epicenter of semiconductors, this land was once the strategic supply base for global camphor. From camphor to microchips, the enduring vitality of a land always springs from the foresight of its stewards.
During our journey, we experienced Hakka rice noodles—tradition refined with a contemporary touch—and toured the exquisite Western-style residence where Mr. Chiang A-hsin once hosted international clientele. We concluded with a stop at the Beipu Farmers' Association to pick up some precious Oriental Beauty Tea, capturing the unique honey aroma of Taiwan's terroir as a lasting memory for our Singaporean friends.
As the evening drew to a close, it became clear that whether in Hengshan, Beipu, or Tanjong Pagar, the story of the land never stops. I look forward to transcending geographical boundaries together, working hand-in-hand toward a sustainable home and the advancement of human civilization.
